The Most Iconic Songs From GTA: San Andreas

Getting The Most Out of Iconic Songs from GTA: San Andreas

While San Andreas might have hit our screens 22 years ago, the game’s legacy has bled into the far corners of media and entertainment. Not only did it define a generation of console gamers, but it added a new layer to what game designers previously thought was possible. While GTA 3 and Vice City both had their own iconic soundtracks, the greater number of songs from GTA: San Andreas, spanning techno, old-school rap, and iconic 70s classic rock and funk, explored uncharted terrain.

The remasters of the game received mixed reviews in 2021, but what they did do, for those who live in a perpetual state of gaming nostalgia like me, was introduce a glossy new revamp to games that defined my younger years. With that in mind, there’s a generous slice of subjectivity to this list – but let’s dive in.

Keeping It Funky

Given that San Andreas is set in the early 1990s, we were only a decade and a half removed from the funk era. The James Brown, Kool & The Gang, and Sly & The Family Stone era. It would’ve been unthinkable for Rockstar to gloss over this effortlessly cool period of music, and they didn’t just give us a string of the greatest funk hits of their time; they were brought into important areas of the game, too.

Cross the Tracks (We Better Go Back) by MFSB is the song that played every single time CJ walked into any of the casinos on the Las Venturas strip. However, the Payback from James Brown, AKA Soul Brother Number One, was prevalent in some of the other gambling spots on the third island.

Few games in the history of console gaming have been able to encapsulate the look and feel of a casino, from sprawling floors to Baccarat. In the days since San Andreas first hit shelves, we’ve seen other GTA instalments feature casino games, and the online world has exploded, with cryptocurrency and other innovations driving the industry forward. Live baccarat tables are a popular niche now, and while people wait with bated breath to see what GTA 6 might offer from the perspective of Baccarat and other casino games, for a generation of gamers, these funky classics will be synonymous with the casinos from San Andreas. Honorable mention for Hollywood Swingin’ from Kool & The Gang from the dancing car mission, too.

Keeping It West Coast

As the game opens up to a whole new map, CJ has to navigate around Los Santos 1992, heavily designed and based on Los Angeles of the same era. Again, with this in mind, it would’ve been sacrilegious for Rockstar not to have a whole radio station dedicated to the cultural phenomenon of West Coast rap, which transformed the music world in the early 1990s.

How could we decide which is the best rap song in San Andreas? Short answer, it’s impossible, but if any list you see doesn’t have Nuthin’ But A G Thang, which was ranked the 6th greatest hip-hop song of all time by Rolling Stone, Express Yourself, or It Was A Good Day by Ice Cube – then it is a list that is not to be trusted. All three of these songs are amongst the greatest ever songs to feature in the GTA franchise.

Titans Of Rock

If you are a fan of the heavier genres, then K-DST and Radio X would’ve been your jam. When I first played San Andreas, I didn’t have too much time for these stations, but now that I am older and looking back at them with a newfound fondness, there’s an undeniable conveyor belt of classic after classic, particularly on K-DST – although shoutout to Radio X and Personal Jesus.

Classic rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd have been in the charts as recently as 2025, but it’s their iconic song Free Bird that many people associate with San Andreas, as well as the solo, which has gone down in folklore.

Cruising down the highway on a Freeway bike as the solo ripped into overdrive – magical. As Rockstar has shown us with its range of free-roam games, the importance of video game background development is imperative to the message the game seeks to deliver, but an accompanying soundtrack with the right vibe enhances the experience significantly.

Although the same applies to Young Turks by Rod Stewart and Eminence Front by The Who – certified, timeless tracks that bring people right back to playing the game for the first time over 20 years ago.

Best Of The Rest Songs from GTA: San Andreas

You only need to look at some of the playlists that people have collated on Spotify and YouTube to see how much love there is for each radio station on San Andreas. However, if we didn’t mention the two songs that featured in the first two trailers, then we would be doing today’s piece a complete disservice. Those two songs were, of course, Welcome To The Jungle, and Jungle Fever by Chakachas.

In total, the game has over 120 songs to pick from, so to trim this down to less than a dozen is an enviable task. If we have missed off your favorite song here, we apologize in advance; it’s nothing personal.
